Changing work layouts

Whether your VSM team is working with a value stream to build physical products or software products, or to support administrative operations, facility layouts are critical to improving flow. The critical issue is to eliminate waste in the form of excessive transport and movement. These issues result from inefficient facility layouts or locating departments, business functions, or operations across disparate sites or geographies.

The VSM team needs to work with executive management to obtain funding and approvals, co-locate value stream activities, and change its layout to implement Lean production flows. In Chapter 3, Analyzing Complex Systems Interactions, you learned that optimum Lean flows in a diagrammatic form display a linear sequential flow for the work. However, in an actual physical work environment, a linear sequential flow might not be the best.

Instead, it's often better to have the workflow wrap back around to reduce waste related to the operator excessively transporting materials and motion within the value stream. Therefore, an optimal flow within a facility might have U, C, or L-shaped work areas, as shown in the following image:
